SAN MARCOS, Texas- Media Writing students were asked to conduct interviews of people with different demographics regarding sexual assault during the last week of October.

For the last week of October, Media Writing students were tasked with an assignment of interviewing people of different demographics and getting quotes and opinions on the topic of sexual assault.

"I think sexual assault is an issue at every university, not just Texas State," said Cheyenne Wells, a Junior studying Communications at Texas State.

Few students and young adults answered yes to being personally sexually assaulted, but most had friends or loved ones that had been affected.

"I have good friends who have experienced forms of sexual assault and it is heartbreaking," said Mason Mathias, a 24-year-old real estate agent and Baylor Alumni from Austin, Texas, "I do all I can to be supportive and helpful, but there are times when they need more than a friend and I recommend a professional or speaking to a trusted adult immediately."

With social media and the ease of mass communication in the modern world, spreading the word and raising awareness has never been easier. Allegations of all forms are taken seriously, and the large majority of students stand behind a zero-tolerance policy. “They should punish any kind of sexual assault in any form by expelling the student,” said Victoria Peterson, a freshman at Texas State.

Let your voice be heard if you are a victim of any kind of sexual assault. The National Sexual Assault Hotline is available 24 hours a day, free of charge and confidential. They can be contacted at 1-800-656-4673.

Texas State University will also stand against sexual assault, if you experience or witness any form of sexual assault on or near campus, please call the University Police Department(UPD) at 512-245-2890 or alternatively, 911. You can also visit the UPD website at https://www.police.txstate.edu/
