Texas State University students speak out about sexual assault
By Mykl A. Miller
SAN MARCOS, Texas - Students at Texas State University were interviewed from Oct. 25 through Nov. 1 around the Texas State University campus to hear their opinions on college sexual assault.
“I think a practical approach to preventing it and/or helping victims definitely goes a long way,” said Carmel Lujan, a 28-year-old Account Executive with The University Star. “I think [there should be] very strict punishments for many cases but while still making sure that a thorough interview is done.”

According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), women ages 18-24 are at an elevated risk of sexual violence on college campuses.
“I’m huge on the buddy system," said Kiran Haji, 20. "Making sure you’re with someone, especially when you’re out at night time, or like, carrying pepper spray.”

RAINN also provides information about how college-age victims of sexual violence often do not report their concerns to law enforcement.
“Girls are only going to report it if they know that they’re fully taken care of," said Jazmine Barrios, 18. "If the guy can still go out and about and do as he pleases, possibly doing it to other people, then the girl’s not going to want to report it.”

In many of the interviews the students talked about how there needs to be more awareness on the Texas State University campus about sexual assault.
“Personally, I would like for people to see how serious of an issue it is." said Victoria Peterson, a freshman at Texas State. "We can spread the word all we want but people may not understand fully how much it can impact someone’s life. I would try and help anyone who has been through it just to let them know someone cares for them.”
